When an engine is telling you something

If any of this sounds like your vehicle, the diagnostic is free and it is the cheapest hour you will spend on it.

Knocking or a deep rhythmic tap that rises with revs

Blue smoke on start, or steady white smoke once warm

Oil consumption between services with no visible leak

Overheating that returns after the cooling system was fixed

Coolant in the oil, or oil in the coolant

A misfire that stays after plugs, coils and injectors

Rebuild or replace, and how we decide

A rebuild means the engine comes apart, every wearing surface is measured, and the parts outside tolerance are replaced or machined. A replacement means a different engine goes in, either new or a tested unit with known history.

Which one is right depends on what failed and on what the vehicle is worth. A cracked block or a spun main bearing usually settles the argument on its own. A tired but intact engine in a truck you plan to keep for years is a rebuild candidate.

We do not decide that before we look. The diagnostic comes first, it is free, and it tells us whether the noise you are hearing is the bottom end or something considerably cheaper.

The answer is sometimes no

On an older vehicle the honest arithmetic often says the engine costs more than the vehicle is worth. We will tell you that plainly, and we would rather lose the job than take money for work that does not make sense.

That conversation costs us jobs and it is the reason people come back for the next one.

Why a transmission shop does engine work

Because the standards are the same. A transmission rebuild does not forgive a shortcut, and neither does an engine: everything measured, every seal replaced, torque figures respected, and the vehicle driven before it goes back.

We have worked to that standard since 1956, and if the transmission behind the engine needs attention while it is out, it is already in the right building.
