How a failing system behaves

Refrigerant does not get used up. If the system is low, it leaked, and putting more in without finding the leak means paying for the same repair every summer.
We find the leak first. Sometimes it is an o-ring worth very little, sometimes it is a condenser that has been sandblasted by years of valley road grit. Either way you get told which before anything is charged.
What actually fails here
Heat and dust. Compressors work harder and longer in this climate than in most of the country, condensers sit at the front of the vehicle collecting everything the road throws at them, and cabin filters clog faster than the service interval assumes.
A system that is losing performance rather than failing outright is often airflow rather than refrigerant, which is a much smaller conversation.
