In today’s era of Do-It-Yourself engine oil changes where anyone can walk into a parts store and buy all they need to bypass the quarterly tithe at their corner quick lube, it could be forgivable to reason DIY automatic transmission fluid changes would be just as simple.
In truth, auto transmissions are far more diverse than engines in how they’re maintained, and our professional recommendation is that you leave the fluid changes to us in case something goes wrong.
When It’s Not Worth The Risk…
YouTube Mechanic ChrisFix has a great video on the complexities behind Automatics, and how even changing the fluid yourself on a car with damaged clutch packs or worn fluid can cause transmission slippage:
The video also offers a good overview on how to check the transmission fluid level for most cars and what good fluid looks like around the 1:30 mark, but later shows that cars with sealed transmissions won’t have an easy way to check this fluid level.
