Automatic Transmission or Manual? Gas Isn’t Getting Cheaper

With fuel prices reaching $5 bucks a gallon, Americans are looking to get the most bang for their buck. Engine efficiency is often most examined when looking for those valuable MPG’s. But what happens when your transmission also plays a role? As it turns out, manual transmissions used to hold an efficiency advantage over their automatic transmission counterparts, but advances in technology have turned the tables.

Today, a modern, automatic transmission is lighter and doesn’t slip like older torque converters used to.  Furthermore, their lifespan is usually on par with the cost of several manual transmission clutch replacements, meaning they’ve also beginning to edge out manuals in not just power and fuel economy, but longevity too.
