Keep Your Automatic Transmission Safe

Looking for some more advice on keeping your transmission in good working order? YouTube mechanic Scotty Kilmer has his own advice on do’s and don’ts, summarized and linked below:

Don’t Do These to Your Automatic:

  • Avoid excessively wet conditions. Many transmissions come with a vent or breather tube that will introduce water into the housing and gears. Excessive levels of water will ruin a gearbox if it isn’t flushed right away!
  • Don’t shift from Drive to Reverse while the wheels are moving. This point has been covered before, but it’s worth mentioning regularly for emphasis. Internal components weren’t designed for that kind of rapid change in direction. Come to a complete stop, then shift.
  • Don’t idle in Drive for too long.  This tip is more model specific and depends on driving conditions, but sometimes idling in D too long can build up heat in a transmission. Fortunately, this isn’t as much an issue with good condition transmission fluid that can dissipate the heat, so change your fluid!
  • No burnouts!  It’s tempting and lots of fun, but hydraulic clutches don’t grab the same way mechanical ones do. Of course, any kind of rev and dump will wear on a car, but at least in a standard transmission, replacing a burnt clutch is a lot cheaper than rebuilding an entire automatic.
  • Don’t trust manufacturer lifetime claims.  Most “lifetime” automatic transmission fluid is only designed to last degrades until warranty. If you want your slushbox to last longer, change your fluid regularly.
