When changing transmission fluid, or any other fluid your vehicle uses, proper disposal is of the utmost importance. At All Automatic Transmission we go through ATF by the barrel, but adding new fluid to the transmissions we service means we have to find a way to dispose of the old fluid in an environmentally safe way.
Like many petroleum lubricants used in vehicles, transmission fluid is toxic. It can’t be thrown into a landfill like most trash, but what happens after it’s been collected and sent to a disposal facility?
Believe it or not, many times that fluid can be recycled into new fluid, or is burned as heating oil for energy production. According to the EPA, It takes 42 gallons of crude oil to produce 2.5 quarts of high-quality lubricating oil, but only 1 gallon of used oil to produce the same amount and quality of oil. Despite this, an estimated two hundred million gallons of used oil are improperly disposed of each year, contaminating landfills and damaging the environment.
Improperly disposed oil doesn’t get a second life at lubricating or heating if it’s contaminating a landfill, so make sure you know where to dispose of your oil if you change your own vehicle fluids. For those of you who rely on us for your transmission fluid changes, we’ll always dispose of used fluids properly as we do our part to keep our community safe and clean.
